What Age Is Soft Play Hire Suitable For?
If you’re planning a party for a young child, you’ve probably wondered whether soft play hire is right for their age group - especially if you’re inviting a mix of toddlers, babies and older siblings. The short answer: soft play is designed with under-5s in mind, but the right setup depends on exactly who’s playing.
Here’s how to think about it.
Soft play is built for ages 0–5
Soft play equipment (foam shapes, ball pits, ramps, tunnels and ride-on toys) is designed specifically for young children who are still developing balance, coordination and confidence. Unlike playground equipment or trampolines, everything is cushioned, low to the ground and free of hard edges.
This makes it suitable across a wide age range, but different stages of development get different things out of it.
Breaking it down by stage
Babies and early crawlers (0–12 months)
At this age, babies benefit most from soft textures and gentle sensory exploration rather than climbing or bouncing. Ball pits and soft mats give them a safe space to sit, roll and explore textures while older children play nearby.
Walkers and early climbers (1–2 years)
This is where soft play really comes into its own. Toddlers at this stage are testing balance and motor skills - climbing small steps, navigating low ramps, and pushing themselves on ride-on toys. The forgiving foam surfaces mean tumbles are part of the fun, not a worry.
Confident movers (3–5 years)
By this age, children want a bit more challenge - slides, balance beams, tunnels to crawl through, and space to run between activities. They’re more independent, but still benefit from a contained, soft-surfaced area rather than open-ended outdoor equipment.
What about mixed-age parties?
Most children’s parties don’t have a single age group - there’s often a mix of toddlers, older siblings and even a baby or two. This is completely normal, and a well-designed soft play setup can work for everyone at once.
A few things help:
An adult nearby during free play, especially when babies and older toddlers are sharing the same space
Larger packages that include a wider variety of equipment, so older and younger children naturally gravitate to what suits them
Open layouts rather than densely packed setups, giving children room to move without crowding each other
How Scoot and Stack designs for this
All of our packages are built around the 0–5 age range, with equipment chosen to suit a mix of abilities at once. Soft play shapes with steps and a beam give early climbers something to master, while ball pits and ride-on toys keep younger children just as engaged.
For larger or mixed-age gatherings, our Playtime Party package offers the widest variety of equipment and the most space to spread out. For smaller groups or younger children only, Little Movers keeps things simple and age-appropriate without unnecessary extras.
If you’re not sure which package suits your guest list, just tell us the ages of the children attending - we’re happy to recommend the right setup.
